The Trouble with Fate by Leigh Evans #1 Mystwalker

Title - The Trouble with Fate. #1 Mystwalker Series
Author - Leigh Evans
Genre - Fantasy, Paranormal, Romance, Werewolf, Fae, Urban Fantasy
Source - Library
Synopsis - Meet Hedi Peacock. She's half Fae. Half Were. And all trouble…

I Have Two Words For Werewolves:

My name is Hedi Peacock and I have a secret. I’m not human, and I have the pointy Fae ears and Were inner-bitch to prove it. As fairy tales go, my childhood was damn near perfect, all fur and magic until a werewolf killed my father and the Fae executed my mother. I’ve never forgiven either side. Especially Robson Trowbridge. He was a part-time werewolf, a full-time bastard, and the first and only boy I ever loved. That is, until he became the prime suspect in my father’s death…

Bite Me.

Today I’m a half-breed barista working at a fancy coffee house, living with my loopy Aunt Lou and a temperamental amulet named Merry, and wondering where in the world I’m going in life. A pretty normal existence, considering. But when a pack of Weres decides to kidnap my aunt and force me to steal another amulet, the only one who can help me is the last person I ever thought I’d turn to: Robson Trowbridge. And he’s as annoyingly beautiful as I remember. That’s the trouble with fate: Sometimes it barks. Other times it bites. And the rest of the time it just breaks your heart. Again…

I don't want this review to come off as if I didn't like this book.
I will be reading book 2 in the Mystwalker series. The reason I'm typing this is because The Trouble with Fate is in no way perfect.

A few little bits niggled at me when reading, and still do when I think about the book. But when I think about the enjoyment factor I'd say it was great. I looked forward to reading it.

Parts of Heidi's character annoyed me. Stealing from a blind person? That's just plain wrong. I don't care about the fact that later on in the book Heidi thinks that the person she's stealing from already knows but still lets her do it. If you wants to read his books without paying, ask him. If she wants to borrow his car, ask him. For some reason the fact that the blind man came off as passive really annoyed me.

Then there's the blurb. 'She's never forgiven either side'. That's a lie. God forbid Heidi lets her werewolf loose but her Fae powers... She used them whenever she wanted. I don't think I remember her ever wanting to suppress her fae side.

Point number three was the mates thing. There were over a billion, OK that's a slight exaggeration. Maybe a million hints that Heidi and Trowbride are mates, but god forbid either of them realise it. I mean... Trowbridge admitted they could 'knot' and I'm guessing that's a one person thing only, and the eyes flaring, knowing her mother and father had the same look. It's ridiculous. I expected that story-line to be finished at the ending of this book so in the next one they could stand united instead of the whole does he still love his dead wife issue?

And the reason's I like this book... I guess a major factor of it is, is because I don't often read Fae and Werewolf books. I'm not a fan of Fae... *They can't touch metal but there's actually always at least one Fae who can... how typical is that. This book didn't disappoint in that sense either. *Sarcasm** It was honestly a nice surprise when I didn't dislike the book because of the whole Fae thing.

I've also never read a book were an amulet seems like a characters. Even though Merry can't communicate with words, she always manages to make her feelings perfectly clear. I'm surprised Heidi's neck wasn't covered in bruises from all the tugging Merry was constantly doing. It was different and slightly refreshing.

I'd say all young adults should at least try this book. I don't think Heidi is for everyone. She's not really a welcoming character but hopefully in book 2 she'll become a bit more relatable.

3.75/ 5 for The Trouble with Fate. It's not perfect but I'm definitely going to read book 2.

  1. I always have trouble balancing my reviews and worry that they will come off too negative, so I totally get where you're coming from. It's really easy to expound on the things about a book that bother you and sometimes hard to define the things you really love. :-)

This book sounds intriguing. I think I'll add it to my TBR list.
